The Grudge

Friday, September 26th, 2008

The movie, Grudge stars a woman named Karen Davis who is played by Sarah Michelle Gellar.  Do I have to say more?  Karen, an American Nurse moves to Tokyo where she is an exchange student studying social work in Japan.  She then gets a job to help an American woman, Emma because another nurse didn’t show up for work.  What she didn’t realize that was the house that Emma was in is cursed because of the mysterious deaths in the house years before.  Now a supernatural curse is after her.  Will she live?

I love this movie.  There are a couple parts that make you jump out of your seat.  I won’t give away anymore than that.

I would give this movie 8 out of 10 stars.

What do you think, Mark?

Underworld

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

Released in 2003, Underworld, directed by Len Wiseman takes the best of filmography from action flicks such as the Matrix and combines it with a Quentin Tarantino/Robert Rodriguez-type plot.

Great movie and very unusual writing.  The acting was great (and Kate Beckinsale is marvelous).  I thought the plot lost a little of its nerve about half-way through the movie as it tried to establish the relationship between Selene (Beckinsale) and Michael Corvin (played by Scott Speedman).

Overall a great flick.  I need to rewatch the 2nd one as well and maybe I’ll blog about it as well.

Toby, any comments on this one?

I give it an 8 out of 10 stars.  Definitely dark, definitely intense.  NOT scary though.

The Faculty

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

OK this is one of my all-time favorite movies.  I think I just like the characters more than anything.  Released in 1998 this one is definitely an 8 out of 10.  Great intertainment.

Students suspect that their teachers are aliens after bizarre occurances.

What a plot.  Very reminiscent of the Body Snatchers or the Puppet Masters etc. they even make mention of this in the movie which is kind of kitschy.  Anyway the cast (informborrowed from imdb.com is great) :

Jordana Brewster Delilah Profitt
Clea DuVall Stokely ‘Stokes’ Mitchell
Laura Harris Marybeth Louise Hutchinson
Josh Hartnett Zeke Tyler
Shawn Hatosy Stan Rosado
Salma Hayek Nurse Rosa Harper
Famke Janssen Miss Elizabeth Burke
Piper Laurie Mrs. Karen Olson
Christopher McDonald Mr. Frank Connor
Bebe Neuwirth Principal Valerie Drake
Robert Patrick Coach Joe Willis
Usher Raymond Gabe Santora
Jon Stewart Prof. Edward Furlong
Daniel von Bargen Mr. John Tate
Elijah Wood
Casey Connor

Tremors

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

Well I finished watching the 1990 movie Tremors starring Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward.  This is a cult classic and one of my favorite non-scary scary movies.  The cast is great and the plot is OK (giant mutated killer worms attacka small town and kill the inhabitants one by one).

I watched this movie with my 9 year old daughter who is scared of her own shadow, which tells you how scary this realy is.  Ron Underwood is a great director and also directed City Slickers and the 2nd and 4th installment of Tremors (plus a bunch of TV stuff as well).

What are your thoughts on this movie Toby?  Even though we didn’t get a chance to watch it together this time we’ve certainly seen it enough times.  I need to re-watch the sequels to remember them, but this one I’ve seen about a dozen times.

PS: Toby is going to write on “The Grudge” which we saw again recently!
